The Estate - Château Kirwan

Our history

The history of Kirwan dates back over 2 centuries. It began in the 18 th century with the marriage of Mark Kirwan, a merchant originally from Ireland, to the daughter of Sir John Collingwood, an eminent Bordeaux négociant and the owner of an estate known then as Lasalle. Mark Kirwan gradually extended this estate, gave it his name and succeeded in bringing it international acclaim. In 1855, Château Kirwan was ranked first among the 3 rd Classified Growths of the Médoc and was subsequently acquired by Camille Godard, a leading political figure in Bordeaux. Then in 1926, a new chapter in the estate’s story was written when the Schÿler family took over the helm. Having been Bordeaux négociants since 1739, the Schröder & Schÿler wine merchant house continues today to contribute to the commercial development of the estate.

Our vineyard

Carpeting the vaunted slopes of Margaux in a wave of green, the Kirwan vineyard looks out across the Margaux appellation. 37 hectares stretch over an outcrop made up of gravel and clay. It is from this mosaic of 35 plots that the character of the wines is forged. The Merlot, grown on clay with laminite deposits, brings roundness, flesh and balance -characteristics which complement the refined structure and velvety texture provided by the Cabernet, which is grown on the estate’s sun-drenched gravel soils. The final touches are given by the Merlot and Petit Verdot grown on terraces of deep gravel. More than just a vineyard, Kirwan is a terroir built in 3 dimensions.
